Some Days You Feel Like a Nut…
Some days I feel like I’ve been writing forever.And, of course, some days I feel like I’m still a newbie and I know NOTHING. Every time I get a great review or win an award I want to pull a Sally Field, “You like me! You really like me!” You’d think after fifteen books I’d be over that, but nope, not yet.
My next book, The Devil’s Thief, will be out this November. It’s the first book in a new series for Bantam Loveswept called The Saint’s Devils. And I’m nervous. It’s my first mainstream romance. I’ve been writing erotic romance for years. I’ve made a name as an erotic romance writer. So why am I switching gears? To be honest, I just didn’t think I was reaching as broad a reading audience as I could by limiting myself to erotic romance. Countless times I’ve heard the comment, “I’d read your stuff, but I’m not really into erotic romance. If you wrote a mainstream romance I’d love to read it!” So for those readers, here it is! (But never fear, dear readers. There will be more books in my erotic historical series Brothers in Arms!)
Another reason is because I want my writing to stay fresh. Writing mainstream requires different storylines and character development. It was a lot of fun writing this book and stretching myself as an author. I tried to make these books somewhat different from my award winning erotic historicals. This series is lighthearted and playful, reminding me in some places of those old screwball romantic comedies from the 1930’s. 
And I’ve created a Sherlock Holmes type character, Sir Hilary St. John, who’s a mix of Robert Downey Jr. and Thomas Jefferson. Only a historical romance writer would do that, right? I’ve thrown in some mystery, Bow Street Runners, street-wise criminals with hearts of gold, bemused heroes who aren’t quite sure what happened to them, and strong, if misguided, heroines.

How have you stretched your reading or writing boundaries lately?
I have stretched my reading boundaries by reading books about vampires. I love the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. I have also thought about reading some erotic books. Sounds like yours would be a good place to start.

I read both erotic romance and contemporary romance. I’m not big into historical, but since I’ve been part of Lime’s blog the past year, I find myself taking chances with them as well and most of the time I’m glad I did. Recently, I’ve been expanding my reading boundaries by taking advice from some pals on Goodreads. I read so much that I tend to be a little cheap when it comes to new authors or series I’ve not read before, but especially this past week when we were on vacation and I needed plenty of good things to read – I took some advice and started a few new books that were over the cost I usually ear-mark for authors I don’t know. So far, I’m really happy I took those chances and I’ve found some cool new people to read.
I actually have. I had a series recommended to me by a friend and I bought the first tow books in it. It’s the desire, Oklahoma series by Leak Brooke. It’s all kinds of hot and erotic and the second book had quite a bit of bdsm in it. I usually stick with paranormal romance but this series has been quite good and I think I’ll be reading a lot more in this genre.
I’ve been stretching my reading boundaries as well. In some cases taking chances fell flat, but a few others have turned out well and I’ll be reading more of those genres and authors. Finding the time to read these days is my major problem! I never thought I’d have to schedule time to read.
I’ll be at AAD but I don’t know if I can make it there in time for the readings. My finals are right at the beginning of AAD so I’ll be showing up late. Sadface. I’m a big fan of erotic romance but I can’t wait to dig into your new series.
I don’t know if I’ve stretched my reading boundaries lately since I tend to read most everything. A couple years ago I started reading HR again after not going near it for 10 years and I’ve started reading m/m, sci-fi, and fantasy in the last year.
